Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Aug 18: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday said that a well-marked low-pressure area has formed over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, extending over north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coasts. The system is expected to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression within 12 hours, before crossing the south Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coasts by the forenoon of August 19, 2025.
Under its impact, Odisha is likely to witness very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds in the coming days. The IMD has issued a red warning for Koraput, Malkangiri, and Nabarangpur districts on August 19, forecasting isolated extremely heavy downpours with wind speeds of 30–40 kmph.
An orange warning has been issued for Kalahandi, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Kandhamal, while yellow alerts cover coastal and interior districts including Cuttack, Khurda, Puri, Balasore, Bhadrak, Sundargarh, and Sambalpur.
For August 20, yellow warnings remain in effect for several southern and western districts, while on August 21, coastal districts such as Balasore, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Ganjam, and Gajapati are expected to experience thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds.
