Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen) Aug 20: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the construction of the Capital Region Ring Road (CRRR) in Odisha. The six-lane, access-controlled highway will span 110.875 km along the Bhubaneswar Bypass and will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) at an estimated cost of ₹8,307.74 crore.

The new alignment will link NH-55, NH-57, NH-655 and SH-65, ensuring improved connectivity to vital economic, social, and logistics hubs across the state. Officials said the project will create nearly 74.43 lakh person-days of direct jobs and around 93.04 lakh person-days of indirect employment, providing a strong boost to local economies.

The corridor will also strengthen multi-modal transport by integrating with 10 economic nodes, 4 social hubs, and 5 logistics centres, while directly connecting to a major railway station, Biju Patnaik International Airport, a proposed Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP), and two ports.

At present, the Rameshwar–Tangi stretch of the national highway suffers from heavy congestion, as it passes through Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, and Khordha. The new Greenfield project is expected to divert heavy commercial traffic, cut logistics costs, and ease urban traffic pressure.

According to the Cabinet, once completed, the CRRR will be a game-changer for Odisha and eastern India, driving industrial growth, enhancing freight efficiency, and opening up new opportunities in trade, commerce, and tourism.
