Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Aug 20: The Central Government has unveiled plans to develop four new river cruise circuits in Odisha under the ambitious Cruise Bharat Mission, which seeks to harness the state’s rich riverine and coastal resources for tourism.
The proposed circuits include Bhitarkanika, famous for its mangrove ecosystem and crocodile habitat; Jobra, located along the Mahanadi riverfront; the Lalitgiri-Udaygiri-Ratnagiri circuit, highlighting Odisha’s ancient Buddhist heritage; and the Balasore Hidden Beach circuit, known for its serene coastal beauty.
Launched on September 30, 2024, the Cruise Bharat Mission aims to double cruise passenger traffic by 2029 while showcasing India’s maritime heritage. The initiative also focuses on creating employment opportunities, developing world-class cruise terminals, and ensuring eco-friendly tourism practices.
Odisha already has an advantage, with the Centre declaring six National Waterways in the state for cargo and passenger movement. Feasibility studies and detailed project reports have confirmed their potential.
Officials believe that developing these cruise circuits will unlock Odisha’s vast tourism potential, attract domestic and international visitors, and significantly boost the state’s economy and employment generation.
