Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Sept 20: Odisha Excise Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan on Saturday announced that the state government has granted permission for the reopening of 70 liquor shops across the state. These outlets had been closed until December 12, 2024, but will now be allowed to resume operations. The move is being seen as a significant step towards strengthening the state’s excise system and enhancing revenue generation.
Responding to a question by Patna (ST) MLA Akhila Chandra Naik in the State Assembly, the minister clarified that these liquor shops will reopen in areas where sales were earlier restricted. He further added that the decision is expected to curb the illegal liquor trade and ensure regulated distribution.
Alongside this, the Excise Department is also reviewing proposals for four new licensed liquor shops — three in Puri and one in Bhubaneswar. In addition, approvals are under consideration for three new liquor manufacturing units, including bottling, distillery, and brewery facilities. These are proposed to be set up in Cuttack (one) and Dhenkanal (two).
