Odisha news: Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Jan 4: In a tragic development linked to the extensive crop damage caused by unseasonal rains in Odisha, another farmer has reportedly taken his own life. The deceased, identified as Kailash Chandra Dhal, died by consuming poison in Koladiha village, located under the Aul police station jurisdiction in Kendrapada district, on Friday night.

This incident marks the tenth farmer’s suicide in Odisha within the past ten days, a grim statistic attributed to significant agricultural losses from the unseasonal rains that affected various parts of the state in December. Family members of Dhal revealed that he had cultivated paddy on eight acres of land, which were severely damaged by the rains. They cited overwhelming financial pressures as a contributing factor to his tragic decision. Dhal had reportedly taken out loans ranging from Rs 2.5 to Rs 3 lakh, leaving him distressed about how to repay them after suffering the crop loss.

His son, Kumarsen, shared that his father had been in deep depression for the past ten days and, despite the family’s efforts to support him, he succumbed to the burden of his debt. This incident underscores the alarming situation in Odisha, where several farmers have either taken their lives or succumbed to shock due to the devastating impact of the incessant rains that have plagued the state since December 19.
