Bhubaneswar, Dec 6 (Reporterspen): Odisha Excise Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan informed the State Assembly today that the government has not reopened any liquor shops that were closed since June 2024.
Responding to a query raised by MLA Sarada Prasad Nayak, the minister clarified that the closures were the result of multiple factors, including strong public objections, pending court cases, involvement of certain license holders in illegal liquor trade, and financial insolvency leading to non-renewal of licenses.
Harichandan further stated that the state government has taken a firm decision not to open any new liquor shops across Odisha. This marks a significant policy shift and signals the administration’s intention to gradually move towards a liquor-free state. He noted that the government is committed to reducing alcohol dependency and promoting social welfare, especially in vulnerable communities.
When asked about the detailed roadmap for achieving this vision, the minister refrained from sharing specific steps but indicated that a comprehensive plan is being prepared. The proposed measures are expected to focus on strict enforcement, awareness campaigns, and alternative livelihood support for those affected by the closure of liquor outlets. The government assured the Assembly that more details will be shared once the policy framework is finalised.
