Odisha News: Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Nov 23: The state government is preparing to amend the Odisha Universities (Amendment) Act, 2020, to grant greater autonomy to state public universities. Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj shared this information with reporters on Saturday, stating that the amendment will give universities more control over the appointment of vice-chancellors (VCs).
When asked about the extension of the tenures of vice-chancellors at three universities, the Minister clarified that this is a temporary measure. He assured that the process for selecting full-time VCs would begin soon.
Suraj further explained that, due to the upcoming amendment to the Odisha Universities (Amendment) Act, the government decided not to proceed with selecting VCs under the current rules. Once the law is amended, the selection process will be initiated, with universities gaining the necessary autonomy. The appointment of VCs will be made in consultation with the Governor, who serves as the Chancellor of state-run universities.
It is worth noting that two days ago, Raghubar Das, the Governor and Chancellor of Odisha’s state universities, extended the tenure of VCs at three universities for an additional six months.
