New Delhi, (Reporterspen): Indian cricket could witness a major change in the coming days as uncertainty continues over the future of chief selector Ajit Agarkar. The Indian teams for the upcoming ODI and T20I series against the West Indies have already been announced, and reports suggest that the selection meeting for the series could be among Agarkar’s final meetings in his current tenure.
Agarkar’s current contract is reportedly set to expire on October 4. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not made any official announcement regarding an extension. This has raised questions over whether Agarkar will continue in the role or whether the Indian team will get a new chief selector.
India Squads Announced for West Indies Series
The BCCI announced the Indian squads on September 16 for the three-match ODI and five-match T20I series against the West Indies.
Shubman Gill will lead the ODI side, with KL Rahul as vice-captain. Amid speculation over his future, Rohit Sharma has retained his place in the ODI squad, while Virat Kohli has also been included.
Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler Aqib Nabi and Naman Dhir have received their maiden call-ups to India’s senior ODI squad. Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Siraj have also returned to the team.
Shreyas Iyer will captain the T20I side, with Tilak Varma as his deputy. Kuldeep Yadav, Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav are part of the squad, along with Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson.
Rishabh Pant to Lead Rest of India
Along with the West Indies squads, the BCCI also announced the Rest of India squad for the Irani Cup.
Rishabh Pant, who did not find a place in either the ODI or T20I squad, has been appointed captain, while Sarfaraz Khan will serve as his deputy.
Rest of India will face Ranji Trophy champions Jammu and Kashmir in Srinagar from October 1 to 5.
Was It Agarkar’s Last Major Selection Meeting?
Ajit Agarkar became chairman of the Indian men’s senior selection committee in July 2023. His current tenure is scheduled to end in October 2026.
There had earlier been speculation that Agarkar could continue until the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, the BCCI has so far made no official announcement regarding an extension.
A PTI report published ahead of the West Indies squad announcement said that the selection meeting could be one of Agarkar’s final meetings in his current tenure. The report also stated that, as of September 16, the board’s top officials had not contacted him regarding an extension.
There has been speculation about the relationship between Agarkar and the BCCI amid the uncertainty, although the board has not officially stated that there are any differences between the two sides.
Why Has Rohit Sharma’s Future Become a Talking Point?
The discussion surrounding Agarkar’s future has also been linked to Rohit Sharma’s ODI career.
During India’s England tour, reports emerged suggesting that the selection committee had questions about Rohit’s place in its plans for the 2027 World Cup. However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia backed Rohit following the September review meeting and praised his performances.
Rohit’s inclusion in the ODI squad for the West Indies series has now further confirmed that he remains part of India’s current ODI plans.
An important BCCI review meeting was held in Mumbai on September 3. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, BCCI president Mithun Manhas, secretary Devajit Saikia and VVS Laxman were among those present. Agarkar did not attend the meeting.
When questions were raised about his absence, Saikia said the chief selector was out of the city and the meeting had been called at short notice. According to Saikia, Agarkar was in a location with connectivity problems and was therefore unable to join the meeting online.
Saikia also clarified that there was no discussion at the meeting regarding changes to the selection committee or Agarkar’s tenure.
Who Could Replace Agarkar?
The current men’s selection committee, apart from Agarkar, includes Shiv Sunder Das, Ajay Ratra, RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha. RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha were appointed to the selection committee in 2025.
If the BCCI decides against extending Agarkar’s tenure, it could either promote an existing member of the panel to the chairman’s position or bring in a new face.
BCCI’s selection committee rules have included the provision of the panel’s “senior-most Test cap” for the chairman’s position. Therefore, international experience could become an important factor if an existing member is promoted.
VVS Laxman and Ravi Shastri Names Also Discussed
VVS Laxman’s name has emerged in some media reports as a possible candidate for the position. Laxman is currently associated with the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence and has played an important role in the Indian cricket system for several years.
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has also been mentioned in some media reports and cricket discussions as a possible option. However, there has been no official confirmation from the BCCI regarding either Laxman or Shastri.
Therefore, it would be premature to consider either of them the confirmed successor to Agarkar.
BCCI Decision Awaited
For now, Agarkar’s current tenure is approaching its scheduled end, while the BCCI has not officially announced any extension. The Indian squad for the West Indies series has been selected, with Rohit Sharma continuing to feature in the ODI plans.
The next move will depend on the BCCI’s decision—whether Agarkar is given an extension, an existing selection committee member is elevated to the chairman’s position, or a new former international cricketer is brought into the role.
The final picture will become clear only after the BCCI makes an official announcement.
