crime new: Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Dec 5: In a significant operation against smuggling, personnel from the Government Railway Police (GRP) seized 60 kg of silver ornaments from a man in Rourkela, Odisha.
The individual, identified as Chandan Kumar, was apprehended while transporting the silver illegally and was subsequently handed over to the GST department for further inquiry on Thursday. His inability to provide satisfactory explanations raised suspicion among the authorities.
Chandan was reportedly traveling from Agra to Ranchi in Jharkhand when he made a brief stop in Rourkela. During the initial investigation by the GST department, he claimed that the silver ornaments were intended for personal use and were purchased from legitimate sources. He alleged that he had bought around 51 kg of silver in Agra and presented invoices to substantiate his claims.
However, it was revealed that during his stopover in Rourkela, Chandan made an additional purchase of approximately 10 kg of silver biscuits but could not produce an invoice for this transaction. A senior GST official noted discrepancies in the invoices provided by Kumar, prompting a thorough investigation to verify the authenticity of the documents and to determine the origin of the silver.
