Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Aug 13: Theatre artist Gopal Sahu, renowned for his portrayal of Kansa in the Bargarh Dhanu Yatra, passed away on Tuesday morning at the age of 70.
Sahu had been suffering from diabetes and was admitted to a private hospital in Jharsuguda on Monday due to health concerns. He succumbed to his illness while undergoing treatment.
Sahu was celebrated for his role as Kansa in the world’s largest open-air theatre, spanning five square kilometers. He portrayed the character for 23 years, from 1984 to 1998 and again from 2001 to 2008. After a brief hiatus, he returned to the role in 2001 following the departure of Bhubaneswar Pradhan, who had been cast in 1999 but did not meet the organizers’ expectations. Sahu was ultimately replaced in 2009 due to declining health.
The loss of his iconic role had a profound impact on Sahu. He often reflected on his past fame with a sense of nostalgia, expressing feelings of diminished stature. His wife was instrumental in encouraging him to take on the role, believing his physique and voice suited the character. Sahu’s contributions to the role of Kansa earned him the Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 1994 and a lifetime achievement award from then-Chief Minister J.B. Patnaik. His nephew also continued the legacy, playing Krishna from 2005 to 2008.
