Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), March 26: Justice Harish Tandon was sworn in as the 35th Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court on Wednesday in a solemn ceremony held on the court premises in Cuttack. Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati administered the oath of office to him in the presence of several dignitaries.
The event was attended by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari, Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan, Judges of the Orissa High Court, members of the Bar Association, and other senior officials.
Before the swearing-in ceremony, Justice Tandon, accompanied by his wife, visited the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri to seek the blessings of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra. He was honored with a sacred “Khandua” cloth as a mark of respect.
The post of Chief Justice had been vacant since January 19 following the retirement of Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh. Justice Arindam Sinha had been officiating as Acting Chief Justice.
The Supreme Court collegium recommended Justice Tandon’s appointment on March 6, and the central government approved it on March 21.
A law graduate from Calcutta University, Justice Tandon enrolled as an advocate in 1989 and specialized in civil cases before his elevation as a judge of the Calcutta High Court on April 13, 2010.
