odisha news: Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Jan 2: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced a significant increase in pensions for Odisha’s freedom fighters on Thursday, acknowledging their invaluable contributions to India’s independence struggle. Speaking at the 38th Independence Fighters’ Day celebration, the CM emphasized the state’s commitment to honoring their sacrifices.

The monthly pension for freedom fighters who were imprisoned during the struggle has been doubled to Rs 20,000, up from Rs 10,000. Those who actively participated but were not imprisoned will now receive Rs 15,000, increased from Rs 9,000. Additionally, beneficiaries of the National Pension Scheme will receive Rs 10,000, up from Rs 8,000.

Majhi also announced that individuals arrested under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during the 21-month Emergency period will now be eligible for a monthly pension of Rs 20,000. Referring to the Emergency as the “darkest period of independent India,” he described it as the “second struggle for independence.”

The CM further pledged to ensure the contributions of Odisha’s freedom fighters are prominently featured in school textbooks to educate future generations. These measures reflect the state’s dedication to preserving and honoring its rich legacy of patriotism.
