Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), April 2026: In a significant advancement for minimally invasive orthopaedic care, Dr. Sarthak Patnaik, a leading orthopaedic and sports medicine specialist based in Bhubaneswar, successfully performed a complex arthroscopic shoulder Irrepairable Rotator Cuff tear using a human dermal allograft, marking a first-of-its-kind procedure in Eastern India.

The surgery was conducted on a 64-year-old male patient suffering from a severe rotator cuff tear that had resulted in pain and restricted shoulder movement. In the current treatment parlance, one of the only options that is generally practiced is shoulder replacement.  However, Dr Patnaik, performed this unique procedure involving arthroscopic repair of the torn tendon, reinforced with and augmented with human dermal allograft to enhance structural support and promote faster healing by early osseointegration, hence preserving the entire joint.

This technique represents an important evolution in shoulder surgery, particularly for patients with poor tissue quality or large and complex tears. In such cases, conventional repair methods may fail due to weak or thinned tendon tissue. Biological augmentation adds strength and thickness to the repair, improving the tendon’s ability to withstand physiological loads and significantly reducing the risk of re-tear.

Speaking about the procedure, Dr. Patnaik said, “Arthroscopic biological augmentation with human dermal allograft allows us to address challenging rotator cuff injuries more effectively. In patients with compromised tissue quality, reinforcing the repair with a dermal graft improves healing potential and functional outcomes. This approach is especially

Avana is proud to have supported this landmark case by ensuring timely and compliant access to the Human dermal allograft, said Mr. P Sundararajan, Managing Director at Avana Medical Devices Pvt Ltd. “Our goal is to bridge the gap between international innovation and Indian clinical needs, so patients here can benefit from world-class solutions without delay. We are always proud to introduce new technologies in India to enable surgeons treat their patients better.”valuable in avoiding or delaying joint replacement in elderly patients.”

The patient showed rapid recovery post-surgery, was discharged within 24 hours, and has already reported significant improvement in mobility and daily function.

Beyond rotator cuff repair, similar augmentation techniques using HAD are being explored in procedures such as superior capsule reconstruction, tendon reinforcement in the shoulder and lower limb, and complex soft tissue repairs.
